‘Tokudama’ was given cultivar rank by Schmid (1991) because most authorities, including Fujita (1976), did not report wild populations. It was found as a cultivar in Japanese gardens and brought to Europe by both Fortune and von Siebold in the mid-1800s. Due to its slow growth, it was not introduced until 1870 by Witte in Holland. Like its cousin sieboldiana, it frequently sports and many variegated forms exist. |
