tibae is in Japan called Nagasaki Giboshi, the “Nagasaki hosta,” for its place of discovery. Although known to von Siebold in the 1830s this species was not validly published until 1984 under the name H. tibai (Maekawa). It is related to jonesii and tsushimensis. Plants belonging to this species have many-branched racemes, carrying a large number of light purple-striped flowers and are late-bloomers.
