It isn't known for sure, but the hoagie is thought to have been invented in the Philadelphia area. It's called a variety of names in other parts of the country with subs being fairly common but grinders is common in New England. Hoagie only refers to sandwiches on long rolls that include lettuce and tomato. They date back to the early 1900's on Hog Island when the Philadelphia area was still a large pork producer. Bill hails from there and always called them that. He set out to make the quintessential Italian hoagie and here's what he came up with. This is a very flavorful sandwich.

                   Bill's Italian Hoagie
                             Bill
capacola (sweet not hot)
pepper ham
sandwich pepperoni
aged provolone
lettuce and tomato
jarred pepper rings (not hot)
oregano
Wishbone Robusto salad dressing
long sandwich roll

Instructions

First remove some of the bread from the center of the roll to make room. Then dab a little of the salad dressing on both sides.

From the bottom up - cheese, pepperoni, pepper ham, capacola, lettuce, tomato, peppers. Sprinle lightly with oregano.

Notes - If you prefer heat both the capacola and peppers come in hot versions. This combination also makes a tasty Italian version of a chef salad, just have the meats and cheese cut thicker.

< For the salad version increase the lettuce, cut the meats and cheese a little thicker, toss cut up roll with the salad dressing.
