'Maekawa' was named for Dr. Fumio Maekawa by Paul Aden, one of the first to study and attempt to classify the species of the genus Hosta. It is a selection taken from the species hypoleuca, which was a personal favorite of his, and introduced by Klehm in 1989. It has the same mound habit as the species. The plant is 50 x 17" with leaves 16 x 10". The green leaves are thickly undercoated with a greyish bloom and have elegant veining. It does not have the "one leaf per division" habit found in some examples of the species, but rather forms a full mound. The margins are slightly rippled. Flowers are pale lavender.
