'Mary Marie Ann' came to us from Larry Englerth in 1982. It was a sport of 'Aoki', and Zilis says that it is really much smaller than other center-variegated 'Fortunei' types. It makes a mound 14 x 30". The foliage is mediovariegated but develops seasonal color changes. The leaf is medium to dark green with a creamy-yellow center in spring which changes to a white-gold by midsummer. Zilis also remarks that it will keep this color if given a few hours of direct sunlight. The leaves are twisted and wavy which may well result from the growth rate of the green margin compared to the growth rate of the center of the leaf, which has much less chlorophyll. The leaf blade is ovate with only medium substance. The flowers are medium lavender, funnel-shaped and bloom on scapes 40 to 50" high.
