longipes has a wide ranging habitat that extends 800 miles from Tochigi Prefecture (100 miles north of Tokyo) south across the Japanese Central Alps into southern Honshu and the island of Shikoku and the northern half of Kyushu. It also is unique in having representation on the Seven Izu Islands. Due to this great geographic range many variations of this species have been found and a large number has been given botanical names. It can be said that longipes shows the largest variability of all the Hosta species. longipes var. vulgata (type by Schmid, 1991) is the typical form frequently seen with leaves that have a glossy green back. The type of all white-backed forms with red petioles is longipes var. longipes (type by Franchet et Savatier, 1876). The Japanese name for longipes is 'Iwa'.
