Helonioides (Japan NR)

‘Helonioides’ is in Japan called Hakama Giboshi, the “pleated skirt hosta.” It was found in cultivation in Yamagata Prefecture in northern Honshu. Described on the basis of cultivated material, it is considered a cultivar by Fujita, and Schmid reclassified as cultivars both the all-green form ‘Helonoides’ and the white-margined form, ‘Helonoides Alpopicta’. The original species name was chosen because its clumps resemble Helonias bulata, the Swamp Pink (helonioides = like Helonias). The green cultivar is rare in cultivation, but its white-margined sport is frequently seen.
