| ‘Helonioides’ is in Japan called Hakama Giboshi, the “pleated skirt hosta.” It was found in cultivation in Yamagata Prefecture in northern Honshu. Described on the basis of cultivated material, it is considered a cultivar by Fujita, and Schmid reclassified as cultivars both the all-green form ‘Helonoides’ and the white-margined form, ‘Helonoides Alpopicta’. The original species name was chosen because its clumps resemble Helonias bulata, the Swamp Pink (helonioides = like Helonias). The green cultivar is rare in cultivation, but its white-margined sport is frequently seen. |
