gracillima is called Hime Iwa Giboshi, the ``small rock hosta.'' It is one of the smallest species and found in the mountain valleys of Kochi Prefecture, Shikoku. The name comes from gracilis = gracefully slender, for its very long and slender flowers. A variegated form closely resembling the species is in North America under the name ‘Shirofukurin Ko Mame’. Plants belonging to this species are excellent in the rock or miniature garden and are used in Japan for pot culture.
